Why the material refuses to settle things

Our community keeps one procedural rule that is not a courtesy and not a formality. It is the material's own method, extracted and written down, and the method is unusual enough that it has to be explained rather than just imposed.

By Ishan Parihar, a study community for the law of one material

7 min read

Groups that study the Law of One reliably converge on the same problem. The material is strange, it is dense, it is said to come from a source nobody can check, and the people reading it care enough to argue. So the arguments arrive, and they arrive in a particular shape: bare contradiction, delivered with confidence, about something neither party can verify.

Our community keeps one rule about this, and the rule needs explaining because it is not what most groups do. We ask each other to stay in the upper levels of a hierarchy of disagreement: counterargument, correction, refutation, synthesis. The hierarchy itself is not ours. What is ours is the claim that it is not a politeness standard at all. It is the material’s own epistemic method, taken out of the transcripts and made procedural, and once the connection is visible the rule stops feeling like etiquette. It is written into the community’s published guidelines, which is where a reader can check that this essay and the room actually agree.

How the material argues

Ra’s posture toward its own questioners is unusual and consistent, and three features of it are enough to reconstruct the method.

It answers what it is asked, and it will not choose the questions. Asked whether a plan of questioning would be better, it declines in a sentence that also explains why.

I will not suggest the proper series of questions. This is your prerogative as free agent of the Law of One having learn/understood that our social memory complex cannot effectually discern the distortions of the societal mind/body/spirit complex of your peoples.

There are three separate refusals folded into that. Ra will not suggest the questions. The reason is that deciding what to ask belongs to the questioner, who is a free agent. And the reason it gives is an admission of its own limit: a social memory complex cannot effectively discern the distortions of a societal mind, so it cannot know what this group should be asking. A teacher that would not pick the syllabus, because it does not know the student well enough, is a rare thing.

It holds its own statements as distortions, including its diagrams. That is the subject of the essay on the archetypal mind, where Ra calls the tarot deck a constructed and organised distortion of the thing it depicts. Whatever else this is, it is not a claim to have delivered unmediated truth.

It declines to decide for the asker. When it refuses to name a group that was distorting the material, the reason given is that the person would simply adopt the answer.

It is necessary that each being use free and complete discernment from within the all-self which is at the heart of the mind/body/spirit complex.

That is a constraint the material accepts rather than a rule it imposes. If discernment from within is necessary, then handing someone your conclusion removes the very faculty the material is trying to develop. That is why Ra’s refusals are not evasions. They are the method working.

Why disagreement is not a failure of love

The instinct in a devotional community is that conflict is a lapse. Something warmer was available, and we chose to argue instead. The material’s own account of service makes that instinct wrong, and it does so in the same answer that gives the well-known line about no generalization.

The best way of service to others is the constant attempt to seek to share the love of the Creator as it is known to the inner self. This involves self knowledge and the ability to open the self to the other-self without hesitation.

As it is known to the inner self. The love being shared is not a consensus and not a group’s agreed position. It is what the individual has actually come to know, which means two sincere people will disagree, and the disagreement is not a failure to be minimised but the mechanism by which a group’s understanding gets wider. A circle that never disagrees is not harmonious. It is operating at the level of one member’s view, and it has made everyone else’s inner knowing unshareable.

This is also, incidentally, the material’s answer to why it refuses to settle questions. It does not tell the group what is true about the disputed matter, because the group’s fitness to know it depends on their having worked it out.

The hierarchy, and what each level actually does

Five levels need naming, because the difference between them is where almost every argument in a spiritual group goes wrong.

  • Contradiction. A person says the opposite of what you said, without saying why. This is the default failure mode. Its cost is not that it is rude but that it transfers the entire burden of reconstruction onto the other person, who now has to guess what your objection was before they can respond to it.
  • Counterargument. You give the contrary position and a reason for it. This is the first level that can be engaged with, and it is where most good discussions live.
  • Correction. You show that the claim is wrong about something specific, and you say what is right instead. Correction is a gift and it is received as an insult about as often as not, which is a fact about people rather than about correction.
  • Refutation. You show that the claim cannot be right, with evidence, and ideally with a quotation of the actual passage. In a group studying one text this is the highest form available, because it can be checked by anyone.
  • Synthesis. You take the strongest form of the other position, find the level at which it is true, and build something that contains both. This is the rarest and the most useful, and it is the specific move the material makes when it corrects a questioner without discarding the question.

The rule we ask each other to keep is a floor rather than a ceiling: stay at counterargument or above. Below it, nothing is being compared, and a group cannot accumulate.

The hard part, and where this community disagrees with itself

Two cautions, and both of them come from our own conversations rather than from the material.

This is not a politeness rule. A common failure is to read a disagreement framework as an instruction to smooth things over, at which point it starts suppressing true things that are uncomfortable to say. Our community is explicit that a habitually aggressive tone is a problem for the person carrying it, and that asking everyone to be gentle is not the same thing as keeping the discussion honest. Warmth that costs nothing is not warmth.

Restating before refuting. The practical form of the rule, in this group, is that you say the other person’s position in a way they would accept before you say what is wrong with it. It is not a formality. Most of the disagreements we have watched dissolve were not disagreements about the material at all. They were two people describing different things with the same words, which restating exposes within a sentence and which no amount of further arguing will ever reach.

What it is for

Our own view is that this rule matters more for a group like ours than for an ordinary reading circle, and the reason is the subject matter. The material makes claims nobody in the conversation can verify. A group that cannot correct itself will therefore accumulate whatever its most confident member says, and the confidence will be indistinguishable from grounding until someone who knows the text arrives.

That is also why this site quotes the way it does. Every passage here is checked against the source, attributed in place and to a session, and the library’s claims about what the material says are separate in kind from its claims about practice. A reader who cannot check us should be able to tell those apart, which is the same demand the community makes of itself in conversation.

One more thing the material offers here, and it is a scale rather than a technique.

The call begins with one. This call is equal to infinity and is not, as you would say, counted. It is the cornerstone. The second call is added. The third call empowers or doubles the second, and so forth, each additional caller doubling or granting power to all the preceding call. Thus, the call of many of your peoples is many, many-powered and overwhelmingly heard to the infinite reaches of the One Creation.

Ra, session 10.13 · read it at the source

One person’s call is described as equal to infinity and not counted. Which is a quiet argument against the idea that a small, well-argued, corrected position in a group of eleven people is insignificant. The material’s arithmetic does not work that way.
